GEC-II is a 713 km Inter-State Transmission System cutting through the Himalayas, anchored by two 5 GW HVDC terminals at Pang, Ladakh and Kaithal, Haryana, and integrated with a 12 GWh battery storage system designed to hold transmission utilization at 76%.
Beyond the wattage, the corridor is a defense asset: it delivers the first high-capacity link to the Leh-Alusteng-Srinagar line, turning Ladakh from a power-deficit territory into a net exporter and stabilizing supply to strategic border outposts.
The engineering model is deliberately built around the region's herders. Panels at the ₹60,000 Cr Pang Solar Park are mounted with 1.2m ground clearance, preserving traditional Pashmina grazing routes beneath them — a 500 kWp pilot has already shown zero impact on pasture growth.
By full operationalization, GEC-II contributes 2.6% toward India's 2030 target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity and is projected to offset 26 million tonnes of CO2 annually — powered by roughly 320 clear days a year at 4,700m.
