Sikkim Unchained: The SRRP Link
Mapping the infrastructure that finally connects Sikkim to the national rail grid, bypassing the slender "Chicken's Neck."
Apr 2, 2026
Infrastructure Blueprint
The Sivok–Rangpo Rail Project is a 44.96 km broad-gauge line connecting Sivok, West Bengal to Rangpo, Sikkim, including 13 major and 6 minor bridges spanning the Teesta river gorge, and India's first underground railway station, built inside a tunnel at Teesta Bazaar.
As of March 2026, 100% of tunneling on the alignment is complete.

Strategic Primacy
The line provides a high-capacity, all-weather alternative to the landslide-prone NH-10, which is frequently blockaded during monsoon season, historically choking Sikkim's only overland lifeline.
It also enables rapid surge deployment of heavy military hardware to the Nathu La and Doklam sectors, projected to cut deployment time from the plains of Bengal to the Sikkim border by more than 60%.

Socio-Economic Sovereignty
The project is estimated to cut logistics costs for goods entering Sikkim by 30% to 35%, directly lowering the cost of living. Improved connectivity is expected to spur a 20% increase in village repopulation along the lower Teesta valley by 2029, reversing a long pattern of outmigration.

Tourism
The link gives direct rail access to Melli, known for rafting, and Teesta Bazaar's adventure and homestay economy, supported by a projected 25% surge in hotel capacity in connected towns.
Tourist footfall in connected districts is projected to grow 150% by 2028, adding an estimated ₹1,500 crore annually to the state's tourism GDP.

Environmental & Future Outlook
A ₹1,205 crore specialized tunnel-construction method, NATM, was used throughout to minimize surface disturbance and protect biodiversity across the corridor.
SRRP is the essential first leg of the planned Gangtok–Nathu La link, turning Sikkim from a secluded mountain retreat into a globally connected strategic asset.
