The glaciers that feed 1.4 billion people are retreating — and the region's economic model still assumes they won't

Half of Asia is sustained by water that starts as Himalayan ice. Ten major rivers, one glacial system, and a warming trend that is now rewriting the hydrology beneath some of the world's most densely populated river basins.

The retreat is uneven but accelerating. Glacial-lake outburst flood risk is now highest in India's Kullu and Kinnaur districts, and smaller glaciers across the Indian Himalayan Region are projected to shrink considerably — or disappear entirely — by 2050. Two-thirds of traditional water sources in Himachal Pradesh, the springs and khuls villages have relied on for generations, are already dead or in serious decline. In Mundaghat village, Shimla district, the population has halved as its springs dried up.

The paradox is that the same basin that is drying out seasonally is also flooding annually. The Brahmaputra-Ganga basin absorbs roughly $10 billion in flood losses a year, while less than 8% of its runoff is captured for productive use. The region isn't short of water — it is short of storage, timing, and shared data.

A shared Himalayan water-data network between India, China, Nepal, and Bhutan could turn that scarcity into strategy — but it does not yet exist.
